We love writing about food; after all, it could not be any other way in a region like Liguria, which is one of Italy’s top foodie destinations. In the past we already wrote about some products of excellence in the province of La Spezia, such as the oysters and mussels of Portovenere, the organic delicacies from Val di Vara, the unique Sciacchetrà wine from Cinque Terre. Today we want to indulge in another food paradise near the Gulf of Poets: Framura.
Framura is a small village north of Cinque Terre, located between Levanto and Sestri Levante. The abundance of flowers and herbs that grow in the area help create the distinctive taste of Framura’s products, which include honey, propolis, olive oil, jams, vegetables and wine. The vineyards’ location next to the sea and the salty breeze help give local wines the characteristic minerality that distinguishes them. Framura’s wine denominations are Colline di Levanto DOC and Liguria di Levante IGT.
Among the local dishes you should try tagliolini with mussels, vegetable or anchovy meatloaf, rabbit in breadcrumbs and fritters with courgette flowers. The town is tiny but boasts the historic Bennati Bakery, where you can find a selection of products made with healthy and natural foods, such as Framura’s famous bread, vegetable pies, Ligurian focaccia, pesto, canestrelli and pan dolce.
Lonely Planet had recommended Framura as one of the alternative destinations to Cinque Terre, together with Portovenere, Tellaro, Montemarcello and Sestri Levante. It praised its fairy-tale quality and how easy it is to get there by foot, bicycle or e-bike thanks to the old railway track that was converted into a 5km-long trail for pedestrians and cyclists. You can also reach it with the Sentiero Verde-Azzurro, or the hiking trail that connects Portovenere with Sestri Levante.
Framura is composed by five small seaside hamlets called Castagnola, Costa, Setta, Ravecca and Anzo. But its territory also includes Monte Serro (421 m a.s.l.), the highest peak in the Cinque Terre area.
