Food and craftsmanship are some of the excellences of Liguria. As Catherine Sabino pointed on an article for Forbes, “While Italy has many renowned pasticcerias, some of the country’s most extraordinary and intriguing pastry shops, including a few dating to the 18th century, are found in Genoa.“
One of them, which today is much more than just a pastry shop, is Romanengo. It was founded as a confectionery called “Pietro Romanengo fu Stefano” in Genoa in 1780. Anton Maria Romanengo and his sons Stefano and Francesco transformed their apothecary business by adding the artisanal manufacture of fine local confectionery, candied fruit, sugared almonds and almond paste. Some were processes that the Genoese discovered in the East, together with sugar, at the time of the first Crusade.
But Romanengo also distinguished itself for its unmistakable packaging: elegant wooden boxes handcrafted in Ruta di Camogli and convex paper boxes created exclusively by hand in Genoa.
From ancient times to modernity
Throughout the centuries, Romanengo’s craftsmanship has remained faithful to the ancient recipe books of the old confiseur-chocolatier profession and the art of Genoese confectionary while embracing sustainability and seasonality. For example, the company creates handmade confectionery specialties by following the seasonal nature of fresh products and using the finest raw materials of Liguria and Italy.
Biodiversity, soil regeneration and the reduction of CO2 emissions are also among Romanengo’s values, expressed mainly through its Farmhouse Project, which aims to – among other things – create a network with local farms to exchange raw materials.
