There are some charming seaside resorts that are known for their tradition in handmade sandals, such as Capri, Positano and Saint-Tropez. “So why not create sandals in the Cinque Terre?” This is idea behind the launch of Lanapo, a handmade footwear collection created by Federica Napoletano, whom we had the pleasure to interview.
Tell us about yourself and how Lanapo was born.
I was working in the publishing sector in Milan and earning well, but I did not feel happy. Following my passion for footwear, which I had ever since I was a little child, I completed a series of design courses and graduated in the Arsutoria School in Milan. At the beginning of 2013 I gave life to my project involving handmade sandals, while keeping both professions. In 2014 I understood that Lanapo was my path, so I left the office job and to date I haven’t had the slightest second thought about my choice. The brand’s name comes from my nickname in the office, which was “la Napo” (the Napo, from her surname Napoletano – editor’s note). The idea came on a hot afternoon in July, when I was on a boat excursion with some friends in the Cinque Terre National Park: I thought that this amazing destination could join the list of other seaside resorts with a tradition of handmade sandals.
What characterizes your products?
I believe that it’s very important to preserve the work that Italian craftsmen have been handing down for generations, to continue the craftsmanship as much as possible. Lanapo’s sandals are entirely made in Italy, handmade by artisans with Italian leathers. They also reflect my idea of beauty, which I can describe with three words: pure, light, simple. This is what makes them unique.
What are the most popular models? Which one is your favorite?
The Monterosso model is the first model by Lanapo. Now, unfortunately, it has been copied by other Italian and even international brands :(. However, it remains one of the best sellers. The second bestseller is the Pietrasanta model, with or without studs, it drives customers crazy! My favorite model is the Stromboli velvet sandal. I have it in all colors and it accompanies me everywhere, from the beach to an elegant dinner… top!
Do you know the Gulf of Poets? Are you considering a… Portovenere model? 😊
I know the bay – not as well as Cinque Terre yet – but I have been visiting it more often in the past two seasons and I must say it is wonderful. Many models are getting inspired by it and certainly the Portovenere model will soon arrive!
Where can we find Lanapo?
Our single-brand stores are in Monterosso al Mare and Bonassola (Cinque Terre). Some of our sandals are also available at Grand Hotel Portovenere in the Gulf of Poets. Every year, we set up a temporary summer point in Milan, in the Brera area. We are then distributed in about 100 stores worldwide.
