On the fiftieth anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death, the town of Sarzana near Portovenere dedicates an exhibition to one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century!
The exhibition, “Picasso – the origins of the myth“, will be held at the beautiful Firmafede Fortress from 8 April to 16 July 2023. It is one of the few cultural projects organized in Italy to pay homage to the great artist.
“Picasso’s family was Ligurian, and this exhibition acquires an even deeper meaning for this reason; it is a return to the origins”
explains the curator of the exhibition Lola Durán Úca
The exhibition is a complete account of Pablo Picasso’s artistic journey, from the early days in Paris to the end of his life, when he created some beautiful ceramic pieces, many of which are exhibited in Sarzana.
The exhibition comprises a set of etchings, drypoints, aquatints, lithographs, and the famous painting Tête de femme. You will also find some photographs by Robert Capa and Juan Gyenes that tell the great master’s daily life.
About the Firmafede Fortress
The Firmafede Fortress, or Citadel, represents a pole for multiple cultural activities of national appeal. In recent years it has hosted important exhibitions dedicated to Andy Warhol, Leonardo Da Vinci and Bansky, among others.
Built in 1249 by the Pisans, it was extensively restructured in 1324 by Castruccio Castracani. The defensive complex was destroyed in 1487 by Florence during the “War of Serrezzana” against Genoa. Lorenzo de’ Medici immediately entrusted the reconstruction to Florentine architects, including Giuliano da Sangallo, Francesco di Giovanni and Luca del Caprina. In 1496 the Genoese reconquered Sarzana and completed the walls.
