The Bedrock cultural association was created in 2019 in the heart of Cararra’s marble quarries, thanks to the determination of some alumni of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara. Their aim was to bring back to life an old school in the quarry as a meeting and exchange place for sculptors and artists. They also wanted to give life and dignity to a place that narrates the origins of marble excavation.

The Bedrock Artist Collective was invited to participate in Grand Hotel Portovenere’s art project called ‘Between Liguria & Tuscany’, which features works of art from Tuscany and from Liguria. These pieces of art were created specifically for the initiative.

Bedrock is behind the artwork called Mar-mo’. Here is how they came up with the concept: “About 65 million years ago, immense telluric and geological forces began to raise and transform a low seabed covered with coral into what we today know as the Apuan Alps. A recovery mission is being carried out by a collective of artists with the aim of finding an ancient morality linked to the relationship between man and nature, which has been almost lost. With our work of art, Mar-mo’, we present our view of the Gulf of Poets. The local sea is represented by the typical stone of the territory, the Portoro marble. The area in the foreground, instead, immerses the viewer in the landscape of the quarries, which we made by using a variety of marble from the Fantiscritti basin, where our atelier is located. All of the elements used for this work of art consist exclusively of recycled materials.”

Visiting the Bedrock Artist Collective’s Atelier

The Bedrock Atelier is in the Fantascritti basin, only 50 km away from Portovenere. It is a great place to visit if you would like to enrich your Carrara Marble Tour experience, learn more about the history of marble, see how this material can be recycled and restored, and chat with passionate artists.

One of the most interesting things is to see what a creative mind can do with the scraps of an industrial excavation: if placed in the right hands, these materials that are unique in their kind can transform into works of art! To plan your visit, contact .
