The creative mixologists at Venus Bar in Portovenere are always conceiving and proposing new drinks to delight locals and travellers exploring the Gulf of Poets and Cinque Terre. The featured cocktail for this month is called “Hadrian’s Wall”. Why?
“Because it mixes the hippocras, which originated in ancient Rome, with scotch whisky from Scotland. Although the wall separated the Roman Empire from northern England and Scotland, the drinks are now blended in this after-dinner drink, which is a new interpretation of the Manhattan cocktail” explain the barmen at Venus Bar.
The hippocras is a drink made from wine mixed with sugar and spices, and it was very popular in the Roman Empire. This cocktail uses the Ypocras by Essentiae Lvnae, created with red wine produced by the Ca’ Lvnae winery near the Gulf of Poets, raw muscovado sugar and spices like cinnamon, cloves and ginger.
