In the easternmost corner of Liguria, the Park of Montemarcello-Magra is a treasure trove of beautiful nature paths and history. It’s a fantastic place if you want to go hiking near Portovenere.

The environment is varied, with alternating cliffs overlooking the sea, grassy paths along the rivers, small villages like Tellaro and wild beaches like Punta Corvo. One part of the park extends between two rivers, called Magra and Vara. Here you can admire aquatic birds such as gray herons, egrets and wild ducks. Their sighting is easy, even if you are not an expert birdwatcher.

The locals love the ‘Strada dei Tedeschi‘ hiking path, officially called trail n. 250 (sentiero n. 250). It is a 6 km (3.7 mi) historical route that runs along the right bank of the Vara River between the small villages of Padivarma and Piana Battolla.

Strada dei Tedeschi translates to ‘Route of the Germans’. It’s a historical hiking trail because it was built by the Wehrmacht German troops during the Second World War, perhaps for the transport of food and ammunition. It is popular because it is flat and shaded, therefore suitable for walking and biking even for those without any experience.

It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to hike along this trail. You will cross cultivated lands, fields of daisies and lush woods, encounter the Vara River and smaller streams, and admire small hamlets like Madonna di Sanna.

Portovenere is 25 km (15.5 mi) away from the start point of the Strada dei Tedeschi in Padivarma, a fraction of the larger town of Beverino. If you need any further information and maps on the hiking trails in the Montemarcello Magra park, visit parcomagra.it.
